Twitter @juangangel Programa: How to Use Genetic Bio Technologies to Improve Cat Techniques of modern biology such as molecular cloning of genes, gene transfer, genetic manipulation of animal and plant embryo transfer, genetic manipulation of rumen microbes, chemical and biological treatment of low quality animal feeds for improved nutritive value, genetically engineered immunodiagnostic and immunoprophylactic agents as well as veterinary vaccines, inter alia, are a reality today and are finding their ways into research and development programmes of developing countries. Biotechnology is offering unprecedented opportunities for increasing agricultural productivity and for protecting the environment through reduced use of agro-chemicals. The major thrust in biotechnology research is currently directed at solving immediate problems of industrialised countries, with major investments coming from transnational companies. However, many of the new discoveries and products will find their biggest markets in developing countries where the potential for improvement in agricultural productivity and health is greatest. The importance of biotechnology and its relevance is only slowly being accepted by policy makers in developing countries. In the presence of economic crisis, strong fiscal constraints, rapid social change and constant political instabilities, the difficulties associated with major policy changes in developing countries are enormous. This paper reviews available biotechnologies with potential application in livestock improvement and identifies those which have been or may be applied in developing countries in general, and Africa in particular. The review covers biotechnology applications in the areas of animal genetics and breeding, including conservation of animal genetic resources, animal health, physiology of lactation and growth, and animal nutrition. Introduction Developing countries are faced with the challenge to rapidly increase agricultural productivity to help feed their growing populations without depleting the natural resource base. Biotechnology is regarded as a means to meet both objectives through addressing the production constraints of small-scale or resource-poor farmers who contribute more than 70% of the food produced in developing countries. Biotechnology can be defined as any technique that uses living organisms or substances from such organisms to make or modify a product, to improve plants or animals or to develop micro-organisms for specific purposes. Biotechnology is not new. Man has used it for thousands of years to manufacture products such as beer, wine and bread. Conventional plant and animal breeding which involves selection and mating of phenotypically preferred individuals is a good example of age-old application of biotechnology. What is new about biotechnology comes from more recent breakthroughs such as recombinant DNA technology and associated techniques, monoclonal antibody techniques, embryo manipulation technology etc. These have enhanced possibilities for manipulating biological systems for the benefit of mankind. Among agricultural and allied fields, animal production and health have probably benefitted the most from biotechnology. But successful application of biotechnology has generally been limited to developed countries. Specifically, there are hardly any success stories of the application of biotechnology in the improvement of livestock production in Africa. The purpose of this paper is to review available biotechnologies with potential application in livestock improvement and to identify those which have been or may be applied in developing countries in general, and Africa in particular. In addition, the paper gives a "broad brush" examination of possible reasons for failure of those technologies which have been tried. The paper also presents examples of successful application of biotechnology in Africa and the potential role of biotechnology (both "old" and "new") in future livestock development in Africa. The paper starts by presenting an overview of biotechnologies with current and/or potential applications in the areas of reproductive physiology, genetics and animal breeding, animal health, physiology of lactation and growth and animal nutrition. Given the breadth of the topic, not much depth is given to the review of each area. Rather, an attempt is made to highlight the technologies considered to have current or potential application. The paper concludes with a fleeting coverage of issues concerning the potential environmental hazards of genetic engineering and other biotechnologies, and the need for their ethical evaluation and for an international regulatory mechanism. There are many different procedures being created for blindness but one in particular is standing out. Age-related macular degeneration is one of the most common causes of blindness around the world, and there are treatments for it already, but they tend to be invasive and require constant upkeep. Now there is a treatment that requires only one injection. Though minutely invasive the procedure is effective and reliable; and how it works is quite cool. The injection contains a modified virus, that penetrates cells in the eye and deposits a therapeutic gene. Now, normally the patient would have to go back for follow up procedures, but this injection produces a constant supply of the anti-VEGF protein. Tech and Medical Tech Okay, So we know what 20/20 vision is, but what about 20/15 or 20/10, is it true people can see from 20 feet, with the same quality of if a normal person were 15 feet or even 10 feet? Well yes, some of us are born lucky, but what about technology that gives a person the ability to actually zoom? yes that's right, like a camera. Scientist Doctor Garth Webb of Canada has designed such a device. He has designed a bionic lense that will allow the user to see objects from 3 times the distance their eyes were meant to see?! But what makes this particular piece of technology interesting is that it is surgically inserted, get this, in roughly 8 minutes. The bionic lens is actually folded like a taco and placed in the eye using a syringe filled with a saline solution. Then, in about 10 seconds, the bionic lens unravels over your eye by itself and your sight is “immediately corrected.” The lense is made by Webb’s company called Ocumetics technology corporation and what he has created is absolutely astounding! This lense may be the future of eye care. The implant is said to be the future of curing some types of blindness. The human eye isn’t fully developed until then. Color may be another problem entirely. We are on our way to improving actually vision but color blindness may still be a ways off. There is no treatment for inherited color blindness. Color filters or contact lenses can be used in some situations to enhance the brightness between some colours and these are occasionally used, but many color blind people find these actually confuse them further rather than help. There is a cure using genetic technology, which involves injections to the eye, but it has had no human trials, but it has proven effective on monkeys. Genetic There is a type of vision known as tetrachromacy in which a retina contains four types of higher-intensity light receptors or cone cells, well humans are normally trichromats, which gives us the ability to perceive around 10 million different colors. But a person with tetrachromacy can perceive the world with up to 100 million different colors. I mean imagine the beauty they see in the world. In one interview with a tetrachromat, they were quoted saying that they see even something as plain as snow with vibrant colors and that they get lost staring at the many colors they see on a regular basis. Oh yeah, and only women are capable of have tetrachromatic vision, and only about 10% of all women are actually born with the mutation. This mutation is what helps scentists study potential gene factors for improving color perception. Homeopathic Firstly, eye strain. Staring at computer and television screens can damage a person’s eyes. Most professionals only recommend a few hours a day in front of a screen, but we know this isn’t always possible, so it’s recommended to take a 10 minute break from screens every 50 minutes. Secondly, overall rest, getting the doctor perscribed 7-9 hours of sleep a night will give your eyes the rest they need. Lastly, diet, what you eat can have a huge effect on eye health. Specifically vitamin A, a deficiency in vitamin a can cause serious eye damage. Sources of vitamin a include High sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark leafy greens, many meats have sources of vitamin A.

The Improved Cookstove for Liberia: the Red Fire Pot
Cooking in Liberia is usually done with firewood or charcoal, and there virtually are not any other inexpensive options. The traditionally used stoves are also inefficient and use more biomass than is needed, create smoke and health risks, and are bad for the environment. GIZ/EnDev works in part to eliminate and mitigate these problems by facilitating access to improved cookstoves through promoting cost-effective, locally made, and more environmentally friendly stoves called “Red Fire Pots.” EnDev first developed, tested and introduced the Red Fire Pot to Liberia in 2012. The program also organized training workshops to teach local metal sheet workers how to make the stove. Today, many producers in Liberia sell various sizes of the Red Fire Pot. They say customers who have bought the pots praise them for saving money and time. The Red Fire Pots are also safer, healthier and more efficient to use. These cookstoves use a new technology that burns unused gases from charcoal with a secondary air supply. That air supply then lowers the release of toxic gases that are harmful for cooking and the environment. Here, Red Fire Pot producers and customers demonstrate the benefits of using the Red Fire Pot and share their experiences of working with GIZ/EnDev to make the product available to the Liberian public. From a science fiction dream to a critical part of our everyday lives, artificial intelligence is everywhere. You probably don't see AI at work, and that's by design. AI is changing everything. But do we want it to? [dt-video-embed id="2261033" ] In the last decade, artificial intelligence has gone from a science fiction dream to a critical part of our everyday lives. We use AI systems to interact with our phones through Siri and Alexa, cars like Teslas interpret and analyze their surroundings to intelligently drive themselves, Amazon monitors our browsing habits and intelligently serves us up products it thinks we’d like to buy, and even Google decides what kinds of search results to give us based on who it thinks we are. Artificially intelligent algorithms are here, they’ve already changed our lives for better or worse. But this is only the beginning, and one day we’ll look back at AI in 2018 and laugh about how primitive it was. Because in the future, AI is going to change… everything. But do we want it to? Well, what exactly is AI? Maybe a better question might be: what exactly is “intelligence”? The simplest descriptor is collecting data about the world, and using that data to make predictions in the short and long term. That applies to both people and machines. So when we talk about AI in our lives, we’re talking about everything from a computer being able to read a handwritten document, like an OCR reader, to a robot performing complex surgery on its own, to a massive database categorizing your personality based on what you’ve written and looked at online. Because the world of AI is so incredibly large, let’s take a look at some of the most groundbreaking developments we expect to see in the very near future, and whether that’s a step forward or backward for society. First and foremost, AI systems are already primed to take over thousands, if not millions of jobs. Any job that consists of a human taking down information from other humans, and inputting it into a system is likely to go obsolete. So cashiers, receptionists, telemarketers and bank tellers are all on their way out. As self-driving cars, self-operating drones, and other conveyors from A-to-B get more complex, we’ll also lose jobs like truck drivers, postal workers, courier services, and even pizza delivery. Factories are also becoming fully automated, so are car washes, and movie theaters. Even my job, as a journalist, is threatened by rapidly improving news algorithms that can gather information and deliver it faster, and more accurately. As we develop better AI, we’re discovering that it can not just replace human labor, but also think in ways that humans can’t. Algorithms that can monitor and process massive amounts of data, and make conclusions based on patterns in that data are poised to change every avenue of society. Starting from something small, like optimizing traffic patterns over time to figure out the best routes to take, or how to fix roads and rebuild highways. To something much more serious, like monitoring epidemics and disease, and stopping them before they spread. Machine learning has even shown to analyze human behavior, and predict warning signs by recognizing common language used by people like sexual predators or terrorists, and alerting law enforcement to take action. Then again, that same technology can be used to track down political dissidents, or serve fake news to vulnerable people while blocking out competing opinions and information. The more we study and develop artificial intelligence, the clearer it becomes that this massively powerful tool comes with a great deal of responsibility. As futurists try to plan out a rapidly changing and advancing world, the biggest hurdle isn’t technological, but economic and political. Just a few tech monopolies control the latest breakthroughs in data collecting, processing, and analyzing - and while we may hope that AI will help advance our society, it may just end up working to benefit the tech industry and only those who can afford to take advantage of cheaper, smarter human replacements - maybe.. to the detriment of society. For now, we just don’t know what the future holds.. Application Reports Manufacture of Tomato Sauces and Ketchups Tomato sauces are used in many products including frozen foods, pasta sauces and pizza toppings, etc. A typical tomato sauce would be based on sieved or whole tomatoes, and/or tomato paste. It would also contain water, sugar, vinegar, salt and seasoning. The desired product viscosity would normally be achieved using a starch-based thickener. Tomato ketchup is a condiment manufactured from similar ingredients, although paste is used rather than whole tomatoes. Premium quality ketchups with a high solids content derive their viscosity from a combination of water retention of the fibrous strands in the paste and the gelling effect of pectin found naturally in tomatoes. High-pressure homogenization is also used to obtain the desired viscosity. This is common with lower solids content ketchup, which may also contain starch-based thickeners. The Process:- The recipe, viscosity and solids content of sauces and ketchup vary widely according to the end user. Typical process requirements are as follows: -Mixing apparatus must be capable of dispersing powdered ingredients into the water to form an agglomerate-free product. -If the product is made from whole peeled tomatoes, these require chopping and pulping before addition to the mix. -Insoluble particles in the tomatoes need to be fully dispersed and “milled” to obtain a smooth texture and even dispersion of the pigment (carotin) to give depth of color. -Fibrous strands in the tomatoes must be fibrillated (frayed) to raise capacity for water retention, which increases viscosity. -Once mixed, the product may be passed through a high-pressure homogenizer or colloid mill to obtain the required consistency. The Advantages:- -Dramatically reduced processing times -Rapid dispersion of thickeners and stabilizers -Improved yield of ingredients -Smoother texture and improved product consistency -Improved color -The product fed to the homogenizer is uniform and of low particle size, allowing faster processing through the homogenizer and fewer passes required -Some sauces with low solids content may not require homogenization -Special "low shear" head available for processing whole tomatoes to eliminate risk of milling pips -A Silverson mixer can be used as a "polishing step" after homogenization to improve texture, viscosity, and sheen to ketchup

Community sanitation can be cheaply improved with money-making technology
Basic household sanitation has long been outside the reach of cost-effective comprehensive solutions, especially in communities dependent on septic rather than sewage systems. But this is changing. Groups as varied as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a coalition of private-sector water technology interests are attacking the problems of fecal sludge management, or FSM, particularly in under served communities. Thanks to innovative products and platforms and the collaboration of the Asian Development Bank Institute, the technology that moves water to bathrooms, taps, and kitchens worldwide is within reach of communities that don’t have complex and costly sewage systems. David Robbins, a specialist in on-site and decentralized wastewater management, found that FSM’s efficiency and effectiveness—the hallmarks of modern sewerage systems—can now be used to attract the private sector into a fledgling sanitation economy that can overcome the many political roadblocks faced by communities without sewers.
