Basic Principles Of Landscape Design
Visit http://saintpetersburglandscaping.com for more info... Basic Principles Of Landscape Design Whether you plan on "borrowing ideas" or plan on creating your own landscaping design, you should have at the very least a basic understanding of the principles of landscape design. This doesn't mean that you have to apply every principle to every part of your plan. But just having an understanding of these principles will help you generate ideas and increase your creativity. Great landscaping lies in the eyes of the its creator. So, while the principles of landscape design are great guidelines to follow, don't feel like they're the "have to rules" of landscaping. Abstract and creativity are allowed. Unity should be one of your main goals in your design. It may be better understood and applied as consistency and repetition. Repetition creates unity by repeating alike elements like plants, plant groups, or decor throughout the landscape. Consistency creates unity in the sense that some or all of the different elements of the landscape fit together to create a whole. Unity can be achieved by the consistency of character of elements in the design. By character, I mean the height, size, texture, color schemes, etc. of different elements. A good example would be in the use of accent boulders. If you've ever seen a landscape design that had one large white round boulder here and another large red square granite boulder there and so on, then you've seen that unity wasn't created by this specific element. This is just one example but the principle applies to all other elements such as groups of plants and materials. A simple way to create unity in your landscape is by creating themes. And one of the simplest ways to create themes is by using a little garden decor or garden statues. Creating a theme garden is easier when it's related to something you're interested in or have a passion for. If you're into butterflies for instance, you could create a theme using plants that attract butterflies as well as using statues, ornaments, and other decor that are related to butterflies. Unity should be expressed through at least one element in your landscape and preferably more. Using elements to express a main idea through consistent style and a specific theme is what creates harmony. Visit http://saintpetersburglandscaping.com for more info...

Traditional Landscape Design vs Permaculture Landscape Design
A young family wants to make a change and asked two different landscape design teams to design their landscape for healthy fruits and vegetables, nuts and eggs. The two companies create designs and got back with the couple. The video shows the results and below you can easily see the connections and benefits the permaculture design took into the family’s consideration. Where the traditional design does meet the family’s needs, the permaculture design take a practical look at the landscape, the couple’s desires, and joins them together with harmonious interaction. Here are some of the connections: Chicken house: At a spot in the property where it will eventually leach nutrients down slope into the landscape. Captures it’s own water. Deep bedding method so the whole thing is a egg making compost generator. Greenhouse A: Grow food all year. Doubles as a plant nursery. Greenhouse B: Heats and cools home by providing a buffer zone and convection. Cleanses grey water. Grows nutrient dense tropical food plants because it has a microclimate that can do that. Adds additional living space to the home. Orchard / Food forest: Captures it’s own water by designing it with the slope of the landscape. Fertilized by both chicken system and support species. Ecosystem design to maximum yield. Once established it is almost a zero work system. Wilfdlife habitat. Nature area for a sense of well being. Real long term low maintenance food security Garden and crops: You garden more efficiently when you have to walk through the garden to get into the house. Utilizes keyhole gardens with one entry/rotation point instead of rectangular garden that needs to be worked from the outside perimeter. The darker green areas are support species that are filled with nitrogen and nutrient accumulating species as well as pollinator attractors and beneficial predatory insect attractors to aid in suppressing pests and to create wildlife habitat with an ecosystem rather than monoculture. Vegetables washing station near home entry to maximize work efficiency that also uses the wash water to keep worm farm moist. The culling of leaves and plants from the garden go into the worm farm to feed the worms. The worm farm has a drain at the bottom so they can harvest the worm juice after each wash. Water tanks: Catches drinkable and irrigation water from the roof. Pumped out with a solar powered pump. Irrigates garden with simple low tech, low cost, efficient system. Chicken system: Creates low work natural fertilizer. De-pests growing areas De-weeds growing areas Feeds chickens Compost area: Along with the chicken house it serves as a organic nutrient cycling area. Gives quicker compost for garden needs Feeds chickens Store: The city ordinances allow having a store/stand of some types to sell directly to the public. Parking area captures run off water for food forest Community is established with sales Money is made Community area: Comfortable outside living space outdoor cooking area A visually and aesthetically pleasing area for the family and visitors Meeting area As you can see there are a lot of connections made in a permaculture design that will benefit this family, the soil, wildlife, and the environment. And this example could be used for a standard suburban lot up to around an acre or so of land. But it does not stop there. A baby boomer couple has now called upon a conventional agriculture consultant and a permaculture consultant to design their farm. This should be a show down of exciting designs and the results should be in soon.

Some Basic Principles of Landscape Design
Today I'm going to provide you with this short video covering some basic principles of landscape design. I made this video easily digestible with the fundamental tips to make your first or next design project much less of a headache. Landscape design is actually pretty simple when you focus on one thing at a time, with the first being the fundamentals. In short landscape design, though the name leans toward something very complicated is in fact not very complicated at all. People like to make mountains out of molehills and so they tend to make it lot more than it is. With that being said I chose to focus on areas of my own home landscape so you can see some examples upfront. Let's take a look.

Principles of Ecological Landscape Design Getting It Right 2 23 16 CR
Presented as part of the " Focus on Sustainability" webinar series on February 23, 2016 by Travis Beck and Lyle Almond. There is growing expectation and demand that designed landscapes—from public parks to backyards—should not only be beautiful and functional, but also sustainable. For constructed landscapes to perform as we need them to, we must get their underlying ecology right. Based upon his recently released Principles of Ecological Landscape Design, Travis Beck helps translate the science of ecology into design practice. In this webinar, Mr. Beck explains key ecological concepts and their application to the design and management of sustainable landscapes. Through photos and descriptions, Travis Beck takes us on a tour of Mt. Cuba Center, discussing the real world implementation of ecological concepts from his book. Located in the Piedmont region of Delaware, Mt. Cuba Center is a botanical garden that spans nearly 600 acres of natural lands, grounds, naturalistic and formal gardens. Moving along a continuum from the wildest to the most intensively managed areas, Beck, Mt. Cuba’s Director of Horticulture, will shed light on the opportunities and challenges of applying ecological understanding to landscape design and management. Travis Beck May 2015Travis Beck is the Director of Horticulture at Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware, where he oversees the care and evolution of 582 acres of native plant gardens and natural areas. Prior to Mt. Cuba, Travis worked at the New York Botanical Garden, where he managed large landscape design and construction projects. He is a registered landscape architect and holds a master’s degree in Horticulture from The Ohio State University. His book, Principles of Ecological Landscape Design, published in 2013 by Island Press, applies current scientific thinking to the design and management of successful, sustainable landscapes. This presentation is part of the Webinar Series "A Focus on Sustainability" prepared for landscape professionals and the public. The series is being presented through collaboration of the Ecological Landscape Alliance (ELA), the Chesapeake Conservation Landscaping Council (CCLC), the Midwest Ecological Landscape Alliance (MELA), & EcoLandscape California (ELC). Known regionally for their quality education programs, these organizations are working cooperatively to share knowledge and encourage conversations with landscape professionals from around the country and the globe.
